Humor: Small town politics

by William Nadeau Esq

Created on: December 14, 2009

There is one simple fact that holds true all over the country. The highestpercentage of the population rules where ever any election is held. That means just a single family can take over and rule in any small village. Any tourist through town has to really watch out.. They might become unlucky and upset some grocery clerk. The whole police department can arrive to save their cousin .The elder cousin can judge against the tourist and make their wallet fill the village bank account. Ever tourist passing through wouldn't want  to  spend any time in the village jail house. They'd  never wait for their expensive lawyer to appear.

Tourism is a major industry in almost every small town. Depending on the villages origin the largest family can be shop owners not law enforcement personnel. In villages that were settled by railroad companies the highest percentage of the populationwill have some kind of mechanical back ground. That way they can repair cars just like their great grand father had repair steam trains. Tourists will be treated like a necessity. A grocery store clerk will never make any non-courteousremarks. It's just that the lower income will force the village to hireanyone to be a police man..

At this point every member of the ruling family can get away with doing what ever they want. There is no way any elected non-family member will make them mad. One nut can harass and stalk any woman who hasn't lived in the village for very long. The old family can even keep the judge from issuing any restraining order for free. The judge can take the nut's side and force the helpless woman to pay two hundred and fifty dollars because it is probably due to a relationship problem.

This can be hidden from the harassed woman's husband until the family nut threatens his life. At that point the family nut can easily get some police protection. His cousins can call the police and plead for it when the worried husband actually confronts the nut. The judge does not get any chance to throw the husband in jail when his non-family member friends keep him from going completely berserk.

It is just that every small village is surrounded by larger jurisdictions. Either the state police or the county sheriff can be called in to save the harassed woman. It's just that members of the strong family have enough influence to keep the nut from really getting investigated fully. It is just fortunate that people suffering mentally do not have enough sense to follow their cousins through every thing. That village nut could even threaten to kill the county sheriff and the village mayor. That is what makes law enforcement finally start saving the woman he is stalking. She usually doesn't have to worry about the state or county judge being controlled by the village ruling family.
