People choose to own pets for a variety of reasons, though most of these reasons fall into several main categories. Some of these include companionship, concern for an animal’s well-being, helping to pursue a more active lifestyle, giving children the chance to experience the responsibilities of pet ownership and just plain loving animals! These are all valid and beneficial reasons for owning a pet.
Companionship
Pets make wonderful friends. While some are more cuddly and effusive than others, the same can be said of people, making it fairly certain that any person can find a pet with a similar view and personality.
Concern for the Animal
Can’t stand the thought of some little Fido losing his life for lack of a good home? Many feel the same way, making pet adoption a popular option. Similarly, some people come to own pets through unlikely means such as finding a sick or stray animal who needs the loving attention of a responsible caregiver.
Pursuing a More Active Lifestyle
While some pets require little in the way of activity, there are others that make exercise more or less a natural part of daily life. Dogs are a good example of this. If you own a dog as a pet, you are likely to find yourself up and active, playing or walking with your dog on a regular basis. This can sometimes be just the encouragement someone needs to adopt a healthier, active lifestyle.
Pets for Children
Many people consider pets an important part of childhood. Owning a pet gives a child the chance to experience more responsibility than they are likely to otherwise, requiring them to feed, clean up after and provide love and affection to another living animal. Such an experience is highly valued in the minds of most parents, making this a common reason for pet ownership.
Animal Lovers
Some people are looking to fill a particular need, such as companionship, when they decide to have a pet in the home. Others simply love animals of all shapes and sizes and can’t imagine a life not filled with these little friends.
These are some of the most common of many reasons for which people own pets. For every individual, the reasons behind owning a pet will differ somewhat and that is as it should be, for every person is as unique as the pet they choose to have in their home.
