If, by some miracle, I were suddenly to find myself President of the United States, the first thing I would do would be to address both houses of Congress on television. In this address I would tell them I would veto any bill that landed on my desk containing pork. I would further tell them that if they overrode my veto, I would go before the American people and let them know every bit of pork that I had vetoed.
The second thing I would do is challenge Congress to cut down on their expenses. If the American people have to cut back so should their Senators and Representatives.
After that I would see what I could do about eliminating some cabinet positions. I would propose doing away with the Department of Agriculture (USDA), most of the work this department does can be better and more economically done by the individual states. One important matter that the USDA does handle is food safety and that could be taken over by the Department of Health and Human Services.
I would ask that the Departments of Commerce and Labor be combined; these departments were one department up until 1913. Perhaps combining these two will cut back on the number of regulations added each year. We don’t need more regulations, we just need to enforce the most important of the ones we have.
Another Department ripe for elimination would be the Department of Urban Development. Since all urban areas are situated within states, it should be up to the individual states to deal with urban development. The Department of Education could also be eliminated and each state could handle their own education situations.
Finally I would merge the Department of Home Land Security into the Department of Defense. The money saved by reducing the cabinet departments would go toward shoring up Medicare and Social Security.
I would ask Congress to make a law stating that all Cabinet Secretaries would have had to come from and worked their way up through the ranks of that department. No more appointing someone because they’re your buddy and in my administration there would be no Czars.
Congressional members would have to provide their own transportation to and from their home states and they would also have to pay for any trips abroad. To further save money, I would close some military bases in Europe and Asia. The whole US budget would be frozen except for military pay and veteran’s benefits until the 4 years after the end of the recession.
I would eliminate corporate taxes for companies
