Tips for starting a home business

by Philip Melton

Created on: December 13, 2009

The keys to starting a successful home-based business are very similar to those needed for started any type of business.  The home-based entrepreneur needs to have determination, discipline, and organization to maintain control of every aspect of the venture.  Following are some tips to help you begin planning for such a daunting opportunity.

Assess your Strengths

When wanting to start a home-based business, look at your strengths and what you enjoy doing.  Assessing these personal attributes provides you with a starting point for what kind of business you want to operate.  Take into account responsibilities you have held in previous work experiences.  Also, look to any hobbies you may have.

Discuss Plans with your Family

You should discuss your plans with your family so they understand what to expect from you as a home-based entrepreneur.  Also, your expectations of their involvement in the business should be discussed.  While every possible situation that may arise can not be explained away, at least you and your family can be prepared for what may come.

Assess the Market

If no market exists for your potential product or service, you may be working in futility to start your business.  Research your potential market to see if there is a need for your product or service and make sure what you’re offering fulfills that need.

Write a Business Plan

Putting your business ideas down on paper will help you identify areas of improvement and avoid potential pitfalls.  The plan forces you to think critically about every process involved with running your business and will serve as a valuable guide once you get your home-based business going.

Research Sources of Funding

Once your business plan is complete, you should have an idea of how much funding you will need to start your home-based business.  For small amounts, you can use personal savings or request small loans from family members.  Beyond that, several loans exist that are geared to helping small businesses get started.  Look to the Small Business Administration, regional, and local banks to see how you can qualify for such loans.

Develop a Marketing Strategy

Once you know your potential market, it is time to let that market know that your home-based business exists.  Conduct research to discover the most effective ways to research your target market.  Then, find ways to attract your target market to your business.  Coupons, discounts, money-back guarantees, and similar incentives will help to draw attention to your new venture.

Ready to Open

With the marketing wheel rolling, it’s time to open the doors for business.  Even though you are ready to start taking orders, continue to get the word out about your home-based business.  Keep looking at your business plan for ways to revise it and improve your strategy.  If business starts slowly, review the steps you have taken and be patient.  Hard work and dedication are the only ways to ensure you will achieve business success.
