Are you a Democrat living in an area of mostly Republicans and needs some help surviving? Well, that’s quite a tough situation you’re in then. I’ve got only one word to help you deal with being a fish out of water: Internet.
The wonderful thing about the internet is that it allows people of similar interests and ideas to communicate without the intense pressure of the local political spectrum. Before the internet, we were limited to who we could talk to by geographical region.
People could only talk to others in the same vicinity. If those others are of significantly different political and religious beliefs than you are, though, it can be difficult to discuss your ideas with like-minded people.
Without any people of similar interests close by you can relate to, it is quite easy to feel intense pressure to conform to the expectations of those around you, even if it goes against your personal values.
With the invention of the internet, however, people can communicate very quickly and easily to those of similar beliefs despite geographical distance. This makes it easier to talk to those who hold same political beliefs and will support you in them. You won’t feel as alone in your philosophies and won’t feel so isolated.
There are a number of ways to find people on the internet to relate to your liberal ideals. The best and most well-known way is to visit forums. Forums allow you a way to discuss things with others of similar mindset despite each person being so far apart.
Forums are free as well, and so you don’t need to pay to post on them. Because you can post on a forum at any time, it is a great way for people to stay in touch with each other despite the busy schedules of forum members.
People can just post a message to each other rather than having to talk to each other in real time. This can be a boon when you consider time differences may make real time chatting difficult.
If you prefer real time chatting, some forums have an IRC channel that you can join. You can get an IRC client for free and use it as a chat program. Once connected, you can talk to other members of the forum who go on the sites by chatting rather than by posting. This is a faster way to talk and can be more conversational in tone.
That’s my main tip if you’re in a Democrat living in a very Republican area and are very isolated from other
