There have been many love songs over the decades and they have come in many styles of music and by very varied performers. The majority of these songs may not be of the highest standard, but there are those few that stand out, these are the ones that have lasted for years and will be around for many years to come. These are the songs that when you hear them everything else takes a back seat and you can lose yourself in your favourite love songs. The following are the best songs that you could play for your wife or husband on Valentine’s Day:

5) Elton John - Blue Eyes                                                                                                 As a girl with blue eyes, I love this song. Listening to the beautiful lyrics that were written by Elton John and Gary Osbourne, and the simple yet moving melody, you're reminded of just how wonderful a love song can be.

 4) REM - At My Most  Beautiful                                                                                         This is such a romantic song with some amazing lyrics by Michael Stipe. My favourite line is: " At my most beautiful,  I count your eyelashes secretly."       This line is so filled with unconditional love, it makes my heart melt a little. I find the best love songs have simple melodies, like this one, that convey their message gently and beautifully.

3) The Platters - Only You

I only recently discovered this song again after not hearing it for several years. It is sung beautifully by The Platters, bringing you back to a time long ago, and letting you imagine yourself dancing with a gorgeous man, in a diner, dressed in wonderful fifties clothes.

2) Elvis Presley - And I Love You So                                                                               This song was written by Don McClean and his vocals are great in themselves but the version that really reveals the heart and soul of this song is Elvis Presley's. The majesty of his voice brings out the true meaning of the lyrics, and the passion with which he sings this song is touching.

1) Tony Bennet - The Way You Look Tonight                                                               Without a doubt one of the most fabulously romantic and beautiful songs ever written, it must surely be every girls secret dream to have a man so wonderfully in love with her, that he could express himself in this way.  The song has been covered by many, many people, but it is Tony Bennet's version that is my favourite, the way he sings the words compliment the melody perfectly, making it a timeless classic ode to love.
