What happened to discipline for children?

For generations parents ruled their children with an iron thumb. From the time a child could grab something or walk, a child was taught not to touch, don't go there. Why aren't parents teaching their children these simple rules anymore?

One of the main reasons a parent doesn't discipline their children is fear of the new laws. Years ago, a parent could spank their child when they became unruly. Today, the new laws say that this is not permissible and child abuse. I am not speaking of beating a child, but a simple pat on the hand or thigh when they have misbehaved. Anyone who grew up two or three generations ago, knows that this is not child abuse and that they would probably have gotten a lot worse.

Most of these new laws have been brought about because psychiatrist and their new theory of raising children have greatly influenced society. Parents are being told that they should not attempt to toilet train their toddler. They will learn on their own when they are ready. There seems to be something wrong with this theory when you see a five year old still in diapers.

The theory that you should not discipline a child. It is suggested that a time out is a better way of disciplining. That's a good idea to try, but if it isn't accomplishing anything then it might be time for a good old spanking. Psychiatrist say that it was spanking a child that has caused mental problems when a child grew up. This is what has caused people to commit crimes. Has anyone looked at the children today?

Children have no limitations and restrictions at home. The parents let them pretty much do as they please. First grade children call themselves going out, as in dating. The parents drive them to the theater and other places. What is this teaching a young child?

The influence of psychiatrist have lead parents to believe that a child will teach themselves if left to learn on their own. Granted, a child needs space to discover their creative skills, but a child also needs guidance. There needs to be someone to help them realize that there are limitations to what they are allowed to do.

A child who has been allowed to do whatever they want will undoubtedly have a behavior problem in school when told that they cannot do something. This is seen in schools everyday. Children talking back to the teachers, constantly disrupting the class.

There was a time when teachers could discipline a disruptive child. Discipline in school today is limited to a detention
