The broader the scope for a subject matter discussion, the greater is the chance that more students would be attracted towards it for a fruitful discussion. Teachers must be conscious of this factor to make their every day classroom discussions become more interesting and enticing. The simple fact that everyone has a stake in whatever is happening around the world on any day, makes world affairs a relevant topic for discussion almost everyday in the classroom. How to organize this?
Topics of popular interest must be chosen:
It is common knowledge that students are more attracted towards movies than any other item of daily activities these days. Why don't we take a clue on this and arrange for a daily discussion on movies – not of the local or regional ones, but of the international range. There should be no resistance from the students’ side to such a suggestion. One can expect all-round support for such a discussion in the classroom. This has to be just for 15 minutes or so everyday so that at the end of the discussion, students are left in a buoyant mood to listen to more serious and relevant subject matters. This will give them exposure to international activities of the film world. What could be the benefit? For the first time international discussions are brought into the classroom and that too, without any resistance from the students’ side. This is a great breakthrough which could subsequently pave the way for discussions on other more important and relevant topics of world concern where students could be encouraged to get involved.
Sports could be a lively topic:
Sports almost always is in the very next place to movies when it comes to students’ preferences for activities. So world news concerning international sports and competitions could be taken up for discussions on alternate days or twice weekly depending on the students’ choice. This will not only keep them informed of the world sports events but is also likely, in the long run, to induce at least some more students to actively participate in sports events, which they may not have done otherwise. There would also be healthy discussions on various favorite sports personalities which promote their objective analytical skills.
Politics could come next:
It is now a well recognized fact that it is only politics in every country that decides the fate and destiny of all sections
