Have you been wondering why yoga is so popular? Do you want to become part of the trend? It is no wonder that yoga is increasing in popularity. Yoga is relaxing and can also help you to get in shape. People do yoga for many different reasons. How do you know which style is right for you?
First, identify the reason for your yoga practice. Is your goal simply a physical one, such as losing weight or building strength? If so, you may want to try a Vinyasa or Ashtanga class.
Vinyasa means “Flow” in Sanskrit, and this basically means that the class will be fast-paced and should focus mostly on physical postures. You’ll be holding different lunge positions, increasing your flexibility, and working up a good sweat. To take it a step further, you can jump into Power Yoga, which increases strength and endurance with an advanced workout.
Turn up the heat with Bikram Yoga, a unique style led in a heated room, using the same sequence in each class so yogis can deepen each pose with each class.
Iyengar yoga is focused on alignment, and the healthy way to push your body into different postures. It is good for those working with injuries or already participating in athletic activities to make sure they treat their bodies kindly while getting a great workout.
If you want to use yoga to alleviate stress, get in touch with your emotional side, or open up, you may want to try a gentler style focused on breath work and relaxation. Anusara yoga is a heart-opening practice which encourages students to be graceful, breathe into each posture, and encourage the good in their lives.
Restorative yoga and Yin yoga are much slower-paced styles that use props such as blocks, bolsters, and straps to lighten to the stress of each posture. In a Restorative class, the well-known poses, or asanas, are modified with the use of these props and held for up to 15 minutes, so that the body gradually stresses and realigns itself without too much strain.
Yoga can also be used as a spiritual practice, and sometimes does not include the practice of physical postures at all; Jivamukti and Kundalini classes may appeal to those looking for a deep spiritual experience and regimen.
In summary, if you are just starting out with yoga and unsure which type of practice is right for you, you need to first identify your goals. Based on what you want to get out of yoga, you will be able to choose the practice that is right for you. Above all else, remember that you are doing yoga to improve and better yourself. If at any time it doesn't feel right, it's time to move on to a different instructor or different practice.
