How to choose flattering clothes

by Karen Chaffee

Created on: December 08, 2009

When you look in a full length mirror to see yourself in your entirety, how often have you thought: something isn't quite right, but I can't really put a finger on it.

Knowing how to choose flattering clothes is not an inborn skill for all of us, so it helps to learn some tips and tricks when selecting clothes that will look great on us.

-Know Thy Body Well

Everyones shape is unique, but when we know our bodies well, choosing flattering clothes comes more easily. Look at your body with an open mind. Are you tall and lean? Short and curvy? Hippy? Busty?

Measure yourself, and shop for clothes accordingly. Stay within the height guidelines when choosing among petite, average, or talls. If you're a plus size, embrace that and shop for clothes in the right department. Measure accurately your bust, waist, hips, and thighs, as this comes in handy when choosing clothes on-line or from a catalog.

Since everyones waist enlarges slightly throughout the day, it is helpful to do the measuring in the evening. Don't cave in to the temptation to stand extra tall or suck in the gut, as you'll just feel miserable in the clothes you buy. When shopping in a store, do so at the end of day, as feet also swell slightly by evening.

-Begin With The Right Foundation Garments

Choosing flattering clothes begins with what you're wearing beneath them, so buy under garments that fit properly and are comfortable. In fact, comfort is key when choosing flattering clothes, as no matter what is worn, no one looks good in something that pinches, binds, or itches.

Read a guide on how to take proper measurements for bras, or have yourself professionally fitted at a department store. Bra sizes, like jeans, vary from brand to brand, so it's always best to try them on before buying. And in all under garments, if you want some added control, choose from the newer and more comfortable types of body shapers, such as Spanx. There is a shaper for every body part you can imagine, but again, try them on, and remember the comfort factor, for nothing will flatter a person who feels and looks miserable in an outfit.

-Colors, Prints, and Fabrics

To choose flattering clothes for yourself, guides that help you select colors, fabrics, and prints that will flatter your body are a great help. Some general rules to adopt:

 1. Neutral colors and outfits of all one color, and small prints flatter everyone. Large, bold prints can overwhelm a petite figure, but look great on a larger frame. The
