Defining the American dream

I would define the American Dream as something that is attainable, but not guaranteed. Achieving the dream takes hard work, dedication, and even a little luck. This country boasts all kinds of freedoms that allow a person to follow their own path to success, however one defines it, but many lack the tools to overcome the obstacles on the path itself. Not everyone comes from a rich family or receives a good education. Some are even hindered by others who may or may not have already achieved the dream themselves. Then there are the things that none of us can control. Natural disasters, debilitating sickness, and freak accidents can make the dream virtually impossible to attain. But therein is where the dream lies. It's not the path, but the obstacles one overcomes. It's the boy raised in poverty who goes on to become a doctor. The single mother who puts herself through school to provide for her children. And the old man who fought through two world wars and lived to truly see the fruits of his labor. These things were not promised to these people, they each worked hard and made personal sacrifices to get to where they are. That is the American Dream.
