Perhaps the two classes I taught last semester were unique, but it seems to me that the prevalence of divorce among the parents of today's college freshmen is appalling. And yet, most people don't talk about it for fear of offending divorced family members or friends, or perhaps out of the fear that someday they too will be faced with the prospect of divorce. We cannot say: divorce is BAD, so don't do it. But I think we can say: divorce is bad! Let me be clear: People who get divorces are not baddivorce is! It's miserable! Although I'm sure there are some who marry just to get divorce "benefits," I'm positive it is still true that most couples marry with forever in mindnot with plans to jump ship when the marriage boat enters stormy waters.

The problems between a husband and wife often vary greatly between different couples, but the escalation of any sort of problems, or the continual presence of the same old problems tends to lead many once-devoted couples to divorce.

Instead of viewing divorce as a possible solution, why not consider divorce a consequence of a crumbling marriage that you do your utmost to avoid? Why choose to lose love, hope, the house, even the kids? No matter who loses what, you both lose. Choose love instead!

I realize that no one wants to maintain a marriage to someone who has evolved into a miserable specimen of humanity. But inside every despised spouse are the dying embers of the person you once married, someone who was once worthy of your love. It's up to you to make a new flame from those tiny sparks. Instead of seeking a new love outside your home and family, try building a new love with an old love this Valentine's holiday
