I don't think I'll ever forget the odd feeling of being completely humored over being rear ended. I wasn't laughing over the next few days when the pain set in, but the event itself...sometimes you just can't help but sit back with wonder, and kind of laugh.
I was driving home, heading up a two lane highway. I kept pulling over for several emergency vehicles who needed to get by, and knowing this road, all I could do was pray. When the accident came into sight, I slowed way down, put on my flashers, and started looking for a safe place to pull over. I knew it would be a while. This was no fender bender.
Just as I found a place to pull over, BAM, someone hit the driver's side corner of my truck. It really didn't seem like a hard hit, but my body told me otherwise for days later. When the lady was finally able to slow down enough to find a place to stop, I got to see an amazing amount of transformations in a short period of time.
She went from "I'm so sorry. Are you OK?" to "oh boy, this isn't my vehicle, is there any way we can take care of this between us?" to "Wow, you just suddenly stopped. It took me by surprise and I didn't have time to stop". By this time, I'm thinking, "now this is my fault"?
I didn't want to take any of the troopers away from the people who obviously needed more help than I did, so I called State Patrol and let them know the situation and got permission to just get all of her information from her, and we would handle it when an officer was available. When I asked to see her ID to verify her information, she showed me a driver's license with a hole in it, which of course means that since she doesn't have a valid driver's license, she also doesn't have insurance. This is my life folks!
Apparently, somebody else who saw the accident called the State Troopers, and they called one down from the accident above. This is when things got funny. The trooper saw there wasn't much damage to my truck, and we were both OK. She asked to see proof of insurance, registrations, and driver's licenses. My first chuckle came when she tried to show her license to the trooper with a finger over the hole, which was promptly moved. Apparently this happens quite often, because she had that look of controlled patience on her face. The laugh inside of me increased.
The lady who hit me asked if she could just leave the truck there and walk home, (about 12 miles away), and I thought that was going to be the end of it, but nope, little miss rear end walked past the

For some of the people behind the steering wheel of a car or truck, to call them bad drivers would be an understatement.
My story goes back to a very fateful day; September 27, 2004. On this day my wife and I were driving out of state
