Keeping your feet dry and warm in winter

Feet tend to get chilly during the winter months and are usually the coldest part of the body. This is often due to feet being the closest body part to the ground and the one that receives the least amount of blood circulation. When feet are cold, it can sometimes make the rest of your body feel chilly too. Here are some tips for keeping feet toasty warm in the winter and promoting warmth to the rest of your body as well.

Swap regular cotton socks for fleece or Isowool fabrics. Regular cotton socks are made thin to cool feet off making them cold in the winter months. Wearing fleece or Isowool socks can keep feet toasty warm because they are a thicker softer sock. Fleece socks, especially have a soothing velvety soft inside to warm feet up during the winter season. They are also quite relaxing to wear and almost have a spa-like effect to them. Isowool socks are made with a combination of yarn to keep feet toasty all day long. Wool is especially great at warming feet and keeping wetness out of shoes. However, your feet can tend to sweat when you wear Isowool socks so you may want to purchase a thin pair and try them first. You can purchase fleece or Isowool socks at any Wal-Mart or online.

Wear waterproof boots or shoes during the winter months. Feet tend to get very cold when they are wet from snow or sloppy ice. When feet are chilled from being wet, it is often harder to warm them up. Keep feet dry when outside and you will keep them feeling toasty during the winter. You can purchase waterproof boots usually for around $25 - $30 for a good pair. You could also opt for rubber shoes or galoshes that are not quite as heavy as boots and offer a more shoe-like appeal for those who don't like the feel of boots. Galoshes keep the wet out by sealing feet in a waterproof rubber shoe that come in calf height, or simply ankle height to look like regular shoes. Galoshes typically cost about $15 - $20 for a cheap pair that still works great.

Try wearing sock liners in the winter to keep feet toasty warm. Sock liners are great for keeping water out of shoes and preventing foot wetness. When feet are kept dry, they are obviously warmer, especially in the winter. Sock liners are simply thin sock like covers that are pulled up over your regular socks before putting on shoes and going outside. Wearing sock liners can help keep feet feeling fresh as well. Many sock liners are also made of an antimicrobial fiber that keeps foot odors at bay. If you want dryer, warmer feet in the winter, opt for a sock liner made with lightweight polypropylene. This will help to keep your feet toasty warm and prevents blisters when working or playing sports. You can purchase the best sock liners online or at any Cabela's sporting store. See resource list below for links to online stores.
