However, there are some hidden charges with some retailers. Some gift cards lose a percentage of the original amount if not used within the first 90 days. There are some retailers who remove up to 5% per month after the 90 day period. Be sure to know the terms for gift card before making the purchase.

Another major risk is the gift card company going bankrupt. This happened recently when a retail chain went out of business. The store sold gift cards up to the day they declared bankruptcy and all gift cards were void following the announcement. Everyone who still owned a gift card for that company had nothing but a worthless piece of plastic. Be careful to purchase gift cards from a reputable and stable company.

Purchase cards in large enough amounts

Gift cards often come in specific amounts. This is especially true if purchasing gift cards from discount stores or grocery stores. Buying a gift card in the store often allows the buyer to set the gift card amount and makes the gift card customizable to the specific desires of the buyer. Be sure to buy the gift card in a large enough amount to allow the person to find something they actually want to buy.
