What is sin?

Sin is a mysterious phenomenon that has its origin in the heart of a covering cherub. The event was described thus 'Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: Thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy way from the day that was created till iniquity was found in thee' (Eze 28:14, 15).That sin should have its origin in a perfect being created by God is indeed a mystery. It is even more mysterious when one ponders the reality that this being, called Lucifer, was created by Love, for God is Love (1 John 4:8).

That which was found in the heart of Lucifer is 'Avon' an Hebrew word translated 'iniquity, perversity, depravity and guilt' (www.ucg.org/bsc/08/what is sin.htm).It resulted in him being morphed into a being filled with violence, he also became corrupted, as is so aptly described by Ezekiel the prophet 'Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground' (Eze. 28:18).He lost his name and his position in heaven after he waged war against God there. He was cast out, and renamed Satan, the Devil, old serpent and the dragon (Rev 12:9).He was also described as a murderer and a liar (1John 8:44).

The inequity that was found in the heart of Lucifer caused him to manifest 'Pesha', a Hebrew word translated rebellion, revolt, transgression and trespass' (www.ucg.org/bsc/08/what is sin.htm). ) His influence caused one third of the heavenly host to rebel and were cast down to the earth with him (Rev.12:9).Their mission on earth has been to gain the allegiance of human beings, which were created in the image of God to glorify him .Satan gained access to the world through Adam (Rom.5:12) who yielded to his influence when he was enticed to disobey God.

Adam's act of disobedience is sin. The word sin appeared in the Bible for the first time in Gen. 4:7 where it was personified as that which lies at one's door if one does not do well. The sin of Adam has caused him and all his descendants to be embodied in 'sinful flesh,' (Rom 8:3) wherein dwells no good thing (Rom. 7:18).The image of God in man has been marred by sin and man is by nature the child of wrath (Eph. 2:3).

The products of sinful flesh include, adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred variance, emulation, wrath, strife, drunkenness, revelling ( Gal. 5:19-21). These products
