Book reviews: Mercy, by Julie Garwood

Garwood does it again. What can you say about this lady except she is the definition of an expert in her field. You will not find another author that can write about everything from romance to action, from mid-evil times to current times, and do it all with a flair that will keep you riveted from beginning to end in virtually every novel she writes.

Mercy is no exception. The book starts out with one of the main characters, Michelle, being a protegeic child, who at her teachers urging, is put in a private school that will be able to keep up with her learning abilities. The book then fast forwards into modern day where Michelle has become a doctor, taking her practice home to the back woods town of Bowen Louisiana, where the pay is not great, but the need for competent doctors is.

In the mean time, a very wealthy cousin of Michelle's, Catherine, has discovered that her husband has been involved in some unsavory activities, and her final revenge on him is changing her will without his knowledge. With the information she has acquired about him and his friends, she threatens the very existence of the exclusive group of professionals that call themselves the "Sower's Club". All that they have achieved through their lifetime of white collar crimes is now at stake.

Catherine is both creative and brilliant in the way she doles out her punishment to her husband, John, who is the leader of the club. She will do her best to make sure his cheating ways, how he treats her, and the illegal ventures he has involved himself in, do not go unpunished.

What lengths will The Sower's Club go to in an attempt to keep their secrets from getting out? How far will they go to protect themselves and the nest egg they have accrued? The book is action packed, as the members of the club go to every extreme to try and keep their secrets safe. The name of the book is taken from the event that caused the unraveling of the "Sower's Club's" lucrative crimes.

The love interest in Mercy is irresistible. You can't help but smile during the quips that go on between the main characters, Michelle and Theo. The way Michelle keeps her hulk sized, survivalist big brother, under her thumb is also amusing, not to mention the animosity between Michelle's big brother and Theo. There is no denying who runs this family! The only family member who doesn't seem to be able to be kept under control by Mike, (Michelle), is her father, who is always trying some way to concoct a reason for Theo to stay in the little town of Bowen. Jake, Michelle's father, goes so far as to have various town folk fix different dishes that Michelle is supposed to pass off as her own. He begs her not to cook for Theo herself, because "the way to a man's heart is through his stomach".

Mercy has everything that Julie Garwood readers have come to expect from her. Will the bad guys be caught? What do you think? But how? The very last conflict was resolved in the very last sentence, in true Garwood style.

Ms. Garwood has brilliantly tied in several characters from previous books she has written, which brings a certain familiarity with the new characters of this book, endearing them to the reader and giving the reader a short follow up of what's going on in her previous books characters lives now. She has a way of letting the characters we've already grown to love live on in her other books.
