The best of 2009: Music (song)

by James Hamel

Created on: December 06, 2009

In life there are just some songs that resonate in your brain to the extent that they almost become a part of who you are. You know each word to the lyrics, every nuance to the beat and rhythm. You may have no actual musical talent but when you are alone in your car listening to one of these songs you are the rock star, the diva, the one a million fans are screaming for.

You may have heard one or more of these songs on the radio and a few have probably been overplayed but if you let that ruin a good song for you maybe you should turn off the radio. Don't they just play eight songs at a time over and over again anyway? Burn yourself some CDs and play DJ yourself. Maybe make yourself a CD with this song selection. I promise you won't regret it.

Pink (Sober) The loneliness and the struggle is so palpable in this heartbreaking ode to sobriety that even those who have never struggled with addiction can understand it. The best line? The quiet scares me because it screams the truth.

Kelly Clarkson (I Do Not Hook Up) There is nothing like good-girl Kelly Clarkson when she decides to rock out. You go girl! Best line? Oh, sweetheart put the bottle down/You got too much talent.

Kings of Leon (Sex on Fire) What else can I say? This is easily the sexiest rock song of the year.

The Ting Tings (Shut Up and Let Me Go) Another great modern rock soon-to-be-classic (and probably a one hit wonder) that sounded like something that flew out of a time vortex from 1984. Just try to get the refrain out of your head that goes, I ain't freakin'/I ain't faking this/Just shut up and let me go.

Lady Gaga (Alejandro) Forget Bad Romance. This is the best new song on Lady Gaga's extended Fame Monster album that was just released. Capturing the rhythmic essence of Abba, this song is catchier than the Swine Flu. The best part? She sings part of it in a cheesy French accent. Only Lady Gaga could pull that off.

Rihanna (Stupid in Love) Set to be an anthem for abused women everywhere, Rihanna should be applauded for the
