Chapped lips is a condition where lips can become dry, flaky, sore or even cracked. Some people experience chapped lips more often or more severely than others, sometimes even to the point of experiencing pain or bleeding.
Here are some home remedies for chapped lips that you can use to help sooth and moisturize your lips back to health.
Coat lips before going out
All too often people who suffer from chapped lips may wait until lips are already chapped before applying a soothing balm. Do your best to avoid the condition in the first place by putting lip balm on before even leaving the house.
Constantly Reapply Lip Balm
Be sure to reapply whichever home remedy for chapped lips that you are using after every drink, meal and anytime you have wiped off your lips.
Use a lip balm that contains sunscreen
Most people don't realize that sun can damage lips like it can the rest of skin. Be sure that to use a lip balm that contains sunscreen to help prevent sun damage to lips.
Wear Lipstick
Creamy lipsticks can not only help to soothe lips that are already chapped but can actually help prevent sun damage as well. It has even been considered that the reason that far less women get lip cancer than men, is due to the wearing of lipstick that naturally protects lips from the sun.
Drink Water
Try keeping lips moist from the inside out by increasing your water intake. Be sure to drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water a day to help keep skin on lips moist.
Try Beeswax
Beeswax is one of the best old fashioned home remedies for chapped lips. Luckily you can find beeswax for a very reasonable price in just about any local drugstore or you can order it online.
Avoid Licking
While it might seem the most natural thing in the world to lick ones own lips when they are dry, it is unfortunately one of the last things you should do and can actually cause further dryness.
While you will momentarily apply moisture when you lick them, when that moisture evaporates it can leave your lips drier than ever.
If you suffer from dry lips often, consider keeping a lip balm on you at all times. Also be sure to have spare balm sticks available in places like your office or your car so you always have one handy.
Try a Honey Vaseline Mixture
Apply a little bit of honey on your lips and let it dry. Then without moving lips, apply a thin layer of Vaseline on top of it. Let sit for about 15 minutes then gently remove by dipping a Q-tip in hot water and swiping once across top lip and once across bottom. Do this once a day for about 4 or 5 days and you will see a vast improvement in lips.
Apply Coconut Oil
Coconut Oil is another great home remedy for chapped lips. Simply apply coconut oil to lips a few times a day as needed and you should see an improvement in dry lips fairly quickly.
Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is another home remedy that many swear works great for chapped lips. Simply apply
a small amount of aloe vera gel on lips when needed.
Sliced Cucumber
Simply rubbing your lips with a sliced cucumber is effective for many who suffer from chapped lips.
Change Toothpaste
In some instances it is possible that you have an allergy or sensitivity to the toothpaste that you are using. Especially toothpastes that contain tarter control agents which are known to dry out lips more than regular toothpaste. The same goes for some mouthwashes. Consider changing your toothpaste to one that contains more natural ingredients such as baking soda.
