A towing companies main objective in the community is to provide a service to the people residing in these communities. I will get to some of those services in a moment. I feel compelled before I begin to explain that the towing laws and regulations are different from state to state, and I will say, that the laws in many states astound me. There is still much regulating that needs to be done.
My husband and I own a couple of towing companies in Washington State, and Washington State has very stringent rules and regulations about what can and cannot be done. Before a vehicle is impounded, we must, by law, have a document signed by either a law enforcement officer, or if the vehicle has been left on private property, we must have a document signed by the owner or custodian of that property. Skill and training are a must both on road and off road recoveries. Imagine this one. A car goes off the road at a high rate of speed holding 5 people inside. The vehicle flies off the road so fast that it embedded itself into trees 20 feet off the ground and well off the roadway. None of the people inside can have their injuries assessed or treated until the tow truck operator gets the vehicle, with the people still inside it, out of the trees. Would you trust just anybody if you were one of those people?
People get pulled over for driving while under the influence very often. In these cases, the service the
