Poetry: Dying

by Kristy Bolander

Having you by my side brings comfort to my heart,

Because nobody has been listening and I know they will not start.

I have walked the long road illness brought into my life,

I have done my best to triumph among the days of strife.

My calls to the office have been pushed under the door,

But now I think it is too late for the doctor to do more.

I wonder what words to say into your sleeping ear,

And whether to go out under the stars or simply stay right here.

I finally wake you from your dream and hold you so very close,

I try to whisper the message you will need the most.

Although you reach for the phone, desperately trying,

Help will never reach me for I am already dying.
