Teaching is a very rewarding and fulfilling experience. No matter what the subject matter is, to be able to share your knowledge with another person brings great joy. Teaching the piano is no different. The piano is a good instrument to begin a musical journey, whether you are an adult or a child.
It takes time, effort and a lot patience to build up a teaching studio but it is all worth it. Once you are well established, people will get to know about you more, and you will be in demand.
The following are some useful considerations while setting up a studio.
1. The location - careful thought should be given to the location of the studio. It has to be centrally located, so that parents and students have easy access to the studio. Setting up a studio close to the school district is good, so that children can come to the studio from school.
2.Well qualified teacher with good "children" skills - it is important that as a piano teacher, you are well qualified to teach in a creative and fun manner. Mastery of the method books is compulsory to be able to use the material effectively in teaching techniques and skills. It is preferable that you have a degree in music, so that you are seen a thorough professional, with good education and experience behind you.
3.Network with other teachers - getting to know the other teachers in the city or town, will give you more ideas on setting up the studio and getting more students. Maybe the other teachers can send students to you who live close to your studio, while you can share your students with them. Networking also helps to share books and resources that might not be easily available.
4.Good instrument - Having a well tuned, and well maintained piano is prime. A broken or unkept instrument will immediately discourage people from coming back to your studio. Also make sure the studio is well lit and kept clean. It should be a warm and welcoming place for everyone who walks in.
5.Advertisements - put an advertisement in the local newspaper or newsletter to let people know that you have a piano studio. Go to the near by schools and put up posters so that parents in the school are aware of this opportunity for their kids. Remember, you can never do too much publicity!
6.Lastly, but most importantly, work towards making a difference - each child and adult who walks through your door is your "life project". Use your music and skill, to teach at the highest standard, but also to touch their live for the better. Music is very empowering and very capable of bringing up changes in a person - socially, emotionally, physically and spiritually.
Hope you have fun setting up your studio and empowering people with the gift of music!
