There are a few possible ways that someone can end up with the hiccups such as: eating too fast, laughing, eating hot or spicy food, smoking, heartburn or drinking excessive alcohol.
Regardless of how you may have gotten them, chances are you want to get rid of them as quickly and easily as possible.
Here are a few great and effective home remedies for hiccups that you can use.
One Teaspoon or Tablespoon of Sugar
One of the older home remedies for hiccups and sworn to work by many. Simply eat a teaspoon of white sugar. Some recommend a tablespoon but that is a decision that is a personal preference.
Breathe into a paper bag
Breathing into a brown paper bag is also supposed to be a quick remedy for hiccups. The trick is to breath in and out very quickly and forcefully.
Drink Water
Take a decent sized mouthful or shot of water, hold it in your mouth while you tilt your head back. Pinch your nose and swallow.
Drink Water Upside Down
Fill a glass or cup with water. Bend forward and drink the water upside down.
Gargle with Water
Sometimes simply gargling with water will get rid of the hiccups quickly and easily.
Pull on your Tongue
Another interesting home remedy is to try pulling on your tongue. Simply stick out your tongue and give it a quick yank or two. This is supposed to be a quick and easy remedy.
Hold Your Breath
Another oldie but goodie. Take a deep breath and hold it for a count of 10. Without letting the breath go, suck in a little more air and hold it for about another 8 seconds, then suck in just a little bit more air and hold it for another 5 seconds. Usually works the first time around. If not, the hiccups should definitely be gone if you repeat the process.
Lemon and Bitters
Another old fashioned remedy is to suck on a lemon wedge that has been soaked in Angostura bitters.
Try Peanut Butter
Eating a teaspoon of peanut butter is also supposed to be a quick and easy way to get rid of hiccups.
Sucking Crushed Ice
Another quick and simple remedy to get rid of hiccups is to suck on crushed ice.
Drink Pineapple Juice
While some swear that it is the acidic content of pineapple juice that is the cure for hiccups, others say it is simply the act of swallowing quickly and often. If that is the case, then drinking anything, even water quickly while swallowing often will get rid of them.
Eat a Popsicle of Ice Cream
This works along the same idea as swallowing often and quickly.
Rub the Roof Of Your Mouth
Rub the roof of your mouth with a Q-tip or the tip of your finger. Just be careful not to gag yourself while doing so.
