You'll be amazed at the type of inventory that vintage clothing stores carry in New York City (NYC), such that by frequently finding time to visit these stores, you may turn yourself into aficionado anytime soon. Collections change by the season. Some of stuffs in the stores are perfectly unused, vintage-inspired, gently used, or simply second hand goods - but there's nothing bad in that. Remember, some of them have been donated or given away by some other stores or some enterprises, just to get tax credit. Here are among the highly rated places to do your vintage clothing shopping:
1) Housing Works Thrift Shops - currently with 9 stores, you'll discover that the key to getting the most from your visits to their stores is to determine and study the kind of neighborhood where each of these stores is located. For example, the stuff that you will see in their East 23rd Street store are a lot different from those you will see in their West 17th Street store - each store has different merchandise, and a lot of them have new stuff that have never been used. You'll be surprised, too, at seeing that their price tags are a bit higher than those found in most thrift stores. You'll also be surprised to discover a lot of stuff with high-end brands being sold here. Remember, your money goes to their projects for those inflicted with AIDS, and the homeless.
2) No Relation Vintage - located somewhere in the East Village, between 12th and 13th Streets on 1st Avenue, you'll find used, vintage and consignment goods here. Highly rated for their reasonable price tags, you'll find stuff like New Look dresses from the 50s, leather bags, leather boots, hippie-ish 70s clothing, western wear outfits, jewelry (some are even gold), plus other accessories. However, get ready to shop in a no-airconditioner store.
3) Artists and Fleas Market - this is literally a flea market, where you can do your own haggling for vintage clothing that catches your fancy. At least 30 vendor stalls may be seen at any point in time, and you can do more than vintage clothing shopping, to include stuff you need to upgrade the dcor of your house. Look for this place somewhere in Williamsburg on the Bedford Avenue stop of the "L" train in Brooklyn.
4) Cadillac's Castle - another East Village store on 9th Street in between 2nd and 1st Avenues, this has a boutique feel into it, with a better layout design to highlight their selections of designer pieces. You'll discover brand named clothing and accessories here
