How to train a dog to sit

In order to train a well-behaved dog, you should start your training when the dog is young. However, you can still teach an old dog new tricks so don't become discouraged if you have acquired an adult dog. Most obedience training actually works better on a dog 6 months old or older since they tend to have longer attention spans than a 6 week old puppy.

The first step in training an obedient dog is to train him to sit. This essential function becomes valuable in later training like laying down, staying and walking obediently on a leash. Most dogs learn to sit rather easily. Larger dogs tend to learn to sit quicker than small dogs though. There are a few different methods you can use to train your dog to sit. Practice and repeat regularly the method that your dog responds to the best.

Option 1: Use treats. With your dog standing on four legs in front of you, gain his attention with a treat. Keeping his eye contact on the treat, gradually move the treat over his head. His nose will point upward to the treat and the farther you move the treat back, instruct your dog to "sit." When the treat gets too far over his head to see it clearly while standing, he will put his rear on the ground. Give the dog the treat and praise him in a nice voice. Then, do it again. Repeat 3 or 4 times and then stop for a while. You should practice this exercise a few times a day until you can simply command your dog to sit and he sits. (Remember to praise him even when a treat is not given.)

Option 2: Gain your dogs attention while he is standing on all four legs. Command the dog to sit. Then, press on this backside to push it to the floor and command him to sit. Once his bottom hits the floor, start praising him for being a good dog. Get your dog to stand again and repeat.

Option 3: Combine options 1 and 2. Use a treat over your dog's head and use your other hand to press his backside to the floor while commanding sit. Repeat regularly until you don't have to use your hand and then gradually take the treats away.

No matter which training method(s) you choose to train your dog to sit, repetition is necessary. Reward frequently with praise or small treats. Make the training sessions fun for your dog. Your dog is like a child. He will learn quicker and pay more attention if he likes what he is doing. Consider the training sessions as bonding time with your pet. Good luck and happy training!
