The meaning of Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is about love. It's about reminding yourself and the important people in your life of how important they are to you.

Of course, we all love our spouse, our parents, our family. But we get so caught up in our daily routines, our crammed schedules, that we forget to express our love. We forget that we need to express it. We forget that people have a need to be made to feel special, wanted, needed, extraordinary.

We all value the important people in our lives, but we forget to schedule time for special dinners and romantic evenings together. We work crazy hours to keep up with work commitments and spend the rest of our time taking care of household chores and catching up on sleep. In the middle of it all, we forget that there are people in our lives who are way more important than work or money or a house, because it is just those people who turn a house into a home.

Valentine's Day is just an annual reminder of all these things. It reminds you to appreciate the significant people in your life. To acknowledge everything that they do for you in the course of their daily routines. To thank them for all the little ways in which they make your life better, easier, brighter, happier and more comfortable. It is a time to pamper the special ones in your life and to allow them to pamper you.

Of course, the whole idea of Valentine's Day is mostly in our minds and has gradually evolved into an overblown commercial hype. It is not absolutely vital that you and your partner celebrate on this exact date and feel upset if, for some reason, you are not able to be together on this day. It is a celebration of love that can take place on any day of the year, and every day can be Valentine's Day if you want it to be. It does not have to be about the roses and the balloons and the chocolates. Well, not just about these things, at any rate. What it really needs to be is a celebration of love, a day to spend uninterrupted quality time together and to fall in love all over again. It does not have to be about expensive gifts. It can be about meaningful gestures, like taking some of your partner's daily chores off their hands or making a present for them with your own hands. It can be about a simple dinner at home and giving each other your focused attention. It's really just about being with each other.
