Movie reviews: The Blind Side

by Robert Cramer

Created on: December 03, 2009

This past weekend I went and saw The Blind Side featuring Sandra Bullock. I really like football. A lot. I own several football movies, even bad ones. I love them, so I had some hope going into this. That being said, I am not the biggest Sandra Bullock fan. As far as I can recall, I do not own one movie containing the actress. I don't hate her by any means, just have not cared for many of her movies. Here we go.

The first thing I notice is that this movie is based on a true story. I always find this fairly useless because most times this means they took a basic idea and hollywooded it up. This is a story about a down on his luck individual who is living in a ghetto of sorts, with seemingly little education and even fewer people he can count on for help or even as a decent person to hang out with. Something else I noticed right away is that they do not give our lead character any kind of age. He is one huge man or teen or something, and is a gifted athlete. With these tools in mind, a mutual friend is able to persuade the head coach of a Christian Football team. He is accepted on the basis that he is able to make the grades necessary.

Of course, Big Mike, who is the lead not played by Sandra Bullock, is an outcast because, as far as I can tell, he is very large and quiet. He is even shunned by the teachers because he is apparently dumb. That is until one teacher finds out that he is not dumb, just not well read and can do a passable job if read to. Now, finally, here comes Ms Bullock. She is an interesting lady and has been made the focal point of the movie. This movie quickly becomes more about her and her life then it does about big Mike.

What we learn is that in this world, Sandra Bullock has the closet thing to a perfect family as one can get. Every problem is solved very quickly and Sandra's character pretty much always gets her way. So with this in mind, she convinces her husband, played by Tim McGraw, to allow Big Mike to move in. Of course with this Big Mike gets a real family and the family all learn a valuable lesson. Big Mike makes the high school football teams and begins to dominate and in the quickest ever turn around from walk on to college prospect, Big Mike is in high demand for every college and of course a previous issue rears its head for all of one scene and is dealt with.

So, I will not go into spoilers here but suffice to say this movie has a lot of plot issues and non existent character development and it can be difficult to deal with the southern accents present. With all that in mind, this movie is watchable. The average viewer will mostly likely enjoy this and if you are a Sandra Bullock fan, you will also most likely enjoy this film. There is nothing horrible about this film, but nothing stands out either.

Well kids, that's it for now. Hopefully I will be back soon with less Twilight bashing and more fun.

Have Fun
