The teen years can be a frustrating time for both teens and their parents. The transition into adulthood can sometimes be difficult. It is important for teens and their parents to stay connected during these important years. Here are a few ideas that will bring you and you're teen closer, and help to improve your relationship.
Communication Talk to one another about life, current events, music, school and anything else that your teen is interested in. You might not be excited about your teens interests but you can get let them know you care by taking an interest in what is important to them. Don't argue, debate, or lecture. Have friendly and open conversations that encourage your teen to trust you. If they feel open to express themselves with you they will be much more likely to confide in you in times of trouble.
Stay Active - Do something together, it is much easier to communicate in a fun, friendly environment. Play video games together, go on a drive, a hike, or find an activity that the two of you can enjoy together. You'll grow closer while having fun.
Team Work - Start a project together. It could be something as simple as cleaning out the attic or garage together. Or perhaps together you could paint and decorate a room, build a go-kart, work on the car, or start a craft project. Working together will strengthen your relationship and make lasting memories that will last a lifetime.
Sharing Meals - It's sad that in today's busy society so many families have given up sitting down and eating meals together. It may not be convenient but sharing meals with one another gives you a chance to catch up on each other's lives, and spend time together. Make a point of going out to dinner once a week or making a special weekend morning breakfast together. Make it a fun ritual that the two of you can look forward to, and watch your relationship grow.
