I don't want to close my eyes,
I can't try to go to sleep.
I don't like saying goodbyes.
And I sure don't like to weep.
If I could go to bed,
I'd rather do that instead.
But, I can't get rid of my dreams.
It's not as easy as it seems.
I'd rather be awake,
Knowing my heart's not at stake.
Than sleep and feel my dream,
You killed my self-esteem.
I can choose not to see you,
I can choose to ignore you, too.
But I can't control my dreams,
Until I'm not afraid to sleep.

Poetry: Afraid to sleep
by Cyn Bagley
In the ICU
Hear my heart beat at one hundred
beats per minute
Hear the groaning soldier
with a severed leg
Hear the screaming
Like a rabbit,
In the middle of the night,
I stare at the ceiling
Afraid to sleep.
I don't want to close my eyes,
I can't try to go to sleep.
I don't like saying goodbyes.
And I sure don't like to weep.
I hear a Click, Boom, Clack.....
My mind which is normally finely tuned, is now out of whack...
My body stiffens with each
I don't want to go to sleep
I'm not afraid of the dark
I'm afraid of my mind
It shouldn't be left to it's own devices
