The downside of working for temporary work agencies

Although securing employment offers some advantages, it is important to weigh the disadvantages to determine if this is the right option for you.

As the economy took a turn for the worse, many companies were forced to downsize or shut down. In turn, many people lost their job, increasing the unemployment rates. Many job seekers are being forced to accept any work available, even if it is only temporary, to supplement their income.

A few problems with securing temporary employment are:

1. Unstable work.

The most obvious problem with temporary employment is this is only a short-term solution. Not only is this not a permanent solution to your problem, but the assignment can end at anytime, without notice. If you are relying on this income, you may be in a financial bind if it abruptly ends.

2. Lack of work.

If you need consistent employment, this may not be an option for you because assignments are constantly changing. A person may only work a day or two and move onto another assignment. If there aren't any available assignments in which you are qualified, you will be unemployed and need to wait until something opens up.

3. Lower pay.

Most temporary employment opportunities pay less than if you were hired directly through the company as a permanent employee. This is one of the biggest reasons why companies use temporary services they spend less!

4. Companies hesitant to offer permanent position.

Many times an employer may be hesitant to offer a permanent position because the pay will be higher. Why pay you more for the same work that you are currently getting a lower rate for? Also, companies will then have to offer you benefits and health-care, if available, which also costs more money.

5. Negative attitude from company employees

Sometimes company employees treat temporary workers in a negative way because for some reason they feel they are superior to the temp worker.

6. Who's the boss?

One of the biggest problems is knowing who the correct person to report to is. The employment agency many times requires to be notified of all problems or concerns. They even want you to call them if you need to miss work and they will handle it with the supervisor of the company. Many times, however, they do not follow through on contacting the company, so the company will request you not return and ask for a replacement. I find it best to notify both the supervisor and the agency of any missed work to avoid problems.

These are a few downfalls when it comes to working as a temporary worker; however everyone's personal situation is different. You need to evaluate your personal situation to see if this is an ideal option for you!
