A loveless marriage is the worst form of injustice for all parties involved. After all, What is marriage if not the consecration of a couples love? Some may stay in a marriage, "for the kids." I will tell you first hand, the sake of the children is one of the worst reasons to hold on to a marriage. If there is no love between spouses it will show, and this is the only template children have for the affection shared between a man and woman. I know what you're thinking, if this is a child's template for what a marriage should be, then what would divorce do to their outlook. I guarantee you that a civil divorce is far less devastating to a child's behavior than an uncivil marriage. The tension and resentment that comes from a loveless marriage is contagious, it is a plague upon the entire household. Maybe there is no tension between the couple. Maybe they are simply indifferent, but this too affects the dynamics of a child's life. So, if you are in a loveless marriage for the sake of your children's feelings; You are doing more harm than good to yourself, your spouse and ultimately your children.
Another reason a person might stay in a loveless marriage is a fear of being alone. If you do not love the one you married you are already alone, and if they still love you they are alone and don't even know it yet. It is unfair to both parties to attempt to fake love, love can't be faked. Love requires a total want and desire for your hearts other half, for the fulfilment of that reciprication. It could be that a person stays in a relationship because they are afraid of hurting the other person. Even though they are no longer in love, they still care deeply for the others well being. This too is a great injustice. It is impossible to fulfill the needs of another emotionally if you're emotionally empty. The best thing to do in this situation is to come clean, the sooner the better. Eventually lies will come to light and this may ruin any chance either you have of ever being happy. The longer you wait the more devastating this will be for the both of you. Set them free and allow them the chance at the true love they seek, you may just find a true love of your own.

I think I would find it difficult to understand why someone would stay in a relationship when they are completely unhappy.
