There are not a lot of medications out there to aid us in our fight against viral infections like the H1N1 or swine flu. Antibiotics are not affective in treating the flu so are not prescribed by doctors for it. Instead we are usually told to drink plenty of fluids, to stay home, and to stay in bed until we are well again.
Fortunately there are a few natural remedies which are proven to help to relieve swine flu symptoms that we can use to help us out in our fight to recover from this latest Influenza A strain. These little tips may help to prevent complications from occurring while you are suffering from the swine flu.
The first thing to do when you feel the symptoms of swine flu coming on is to get home and get into bed. Your body is going to be using all of it's energy to try to make you well again. Allow your body the energy that it needs to accomplish this task. It is very important for you to take it easy while you are ill. Do not put additional strain on your heart and lungs during this time.
Drink plenty of water or juice. Drinking fluids flushes the illness through your body as quickly as possible.Your body needs the extra liquid to help you sweat out these toxins, to cough or sneeze them out in the form of mucous, or to simply escort them through your body as quickly as possible.
Hot honey lemon drinks will indeed help you fight the swine flu. Lemon juice is a diuretic, this meaning that it will make you go to the bathroom more often, and this helps to push the fluids through your body at a quicker pace. Honey is an antibacterial and will help to kill germs and bacteria. Honey will also help to soothe your itchy dry throat. Studies have shown that a teaspoon of honey is as effective at stopping a cough as over the counter decongestants are. Honey is also comprised of natural sugars, and so is safe for diabetics, and contains less calories than standard sugars.
Gargle with salt water every hour or two as this will help to kill germs and bacteria within your mouth and throat.
Use a Neti pot or warm salt water sniffed from the palm of your hand to help kill the germs and bacteria within your nasal passages.
Rather than spending your entire day in bed, try to sit up, or get up and walk around the house a little. Although the swine flu seems to come with a very dry cough, this movement will help to prevent the mucous from dropping, and pooling within the lungs.
Use a vaporizer, humidifier or shower to help put additional moisture into your home air.
