Often the thought of purchasing a gift for a co-worker seems like a daunting task. However once you put the procrastination aside it becomes surprisingly easy.
Firstly think of the occasion. Is it a going away present? If this is the case where are they going? It may be a birthday present or a gift to reward them for their hard work and at this time of the year it may even be a secret Santa present.
Once you determine why the co-worker requires a gift find out what your budget is. In office situations a collection is often the best way to getting together the funds to buy the gift.
Once those two things are done it's time to consider the gift itself.
GOING AWAY PRESENTS:
If the person is going to a new job think about what they may need, whether its some desk accessories or a framed photo of their friends at work. If they are leaving to travel some travel guides would be useful gifts or if they are going on maternity leave baby related items would be much appreciated.
BIRTHDAY PRESENTS AND REWARDS FOR HARD WORK
If you are unsure what the person would like vouchers may be a good option. These days you can get vouchers to specific malls and grocery stores, movie tickets and many other options are available.
SOME RULES OF THUMB
Try not to give gifts that are too personal unless you are close with the person you are giving the gift to. By keeping things professional you avoid making anyone feel uncomfortable.
Think about whether your present will be well received for example an extremely health concious person may not appreciate a basket full of goodies such as an alcoholic will not appreciate a bottle of wine.
Try not offend anyone. Staying clear of gag gifts, items of a sexual or religious nature is a good idea. Even when it comes to secret Santa as not everybody celebrates Christmas.
Ask yourself whether you would be comfortable receiving the gift you are about to give in front your co-workers. Use that as a rule of thumb when purchasing the gift.
Avoid bias and ideas of favourites by giving gifts to everyone. Don't celebrate one employee's birthday and not anothers. This can lead to feelings of resentment and office gossip.
Gift giving is a fun activity that shouldn't be too hard so enjoy yourself!
