December 10 of each year the globe celebrates, remembers, and reflects upon Human Rights Day. It's about the right to be heard, the right to live, the right to breathe as others breathe in a world of differences. Even though Human Rights Day of 2009 surrounds the theme of non-discrimination, there are much more serious violations against human rights. We turn to the spirit of North Carolina's Shaniya Davis.
5-year-old Shaniya Davis, the once missing North Carolina girl, was found dead after her biological mother, Antoinette Davis, traded her daughter through prostitution for a debt to repay. Shaniya was last seen with Mario McNeill after her Antoinette Davis allowed McNeill to take Shaniya on November 10, 2009. Antoinette Davis contacted authorities claiming that Shaniya Davis just disappeared one morning. Antoinette Davis now sits in Raleigh's North Carolina Correctional Institute for Women. Mario McNeill is only 2.44 miles away in Raleigh's Central Prison. Antoinette Davis was charged with two felonies, including selling a child for reasons of prostitution, along with two misdemeanors. Mario McNeill was charged with first-degree rape, first-degree murder, and first-degree kidnapping.
When it came to the human rights of Shaniya Davis, it's simple, she was stripped of them at an early age. On a larger scale, on a massive plan, this occurs all around the world and needs the focus of others. Hence the day, Human Rights Day.
Human Rights Day should be celebrated by spirit, a gift from the heart. Time, donations, a simple hand out will do. But what is the best way to donate your services?
Local chapters of those who have been torn by county battles, unsuitable laws, or basic citizenship, could use your offerings. Contact your Chamber of Commerce, your local outreach centers, or locations that assist help for the abused. Not only will you help others out, you will feel better about yourself.
When it comes to the rights of children, remember Shaniya Davis. Give some of your time to organizations that try to help children in abusive situations, whether or not it has anything to do with child prostitution. You may not be saving the world as a whole, but you can save one child at a time from falling into the hands of destructive characters and a vicious cycle of unhealthy patterns.
Human Rights Day is a time when the world should gather the resources to assist those who have not been offered the fair chance when it comes to human rights.
Just remember, it should never be about you that day, it should be all about them. So, put away that party hat, don't spend money on the cake, take your offerings to those who deserve the chance in living life just as you enjoy your human rights. And together we can make a difference.
