Why it can be good to have a break from your diet over Christmas

by Michelle Wilkinson

You may be trying to lose weight, but sometimes there are more important things than counting calories and watching everything you eat. You may be trying to lose weight for the sake of your health and to improve your appearance, but a few days off is hardly likely to kill you. You're supposed to have a good time at Christmas, kicking back and relaxing while spending time with friends and family. How can you have any fun if you're continually preoccupied with the number of calories you're consuming? Sometimes, it's better to just take a break from your diet over Christmas so you can get back to it in the New Year with a renewed focus.

Christmas is a time of overindulgence and it can be hard to resist temptation when everyone else around you is eating large quantities of chocolate and other Christmassy goodies. You don't want to have to tell your host that you only want one slice of turkey because you're on a diet, or if you're the host you don't want to be the only one not being able to tuck into your food with great gusto. The chances are you will end up consuming more than you'd intended to, anyway, so why not actively decide to take a break from your diet? If you accidentally consume a greater quantity of food than your diet allows for you will just start to feel guilty, whereas if you take the decision beforehand that you're going to abandon your diet for a few days you can enjoy yourself and won't get as stressed about the situation.

Your weight may stay the same or you may put on a couple of pounds over Christmas. It depends how much you overindulge and for how long, but at least you know that even though you abandoned your diet for a short while you can get back to it. By having a break from your diet over Christmas you will be even more motivated to get back to it having 'treated' yourself. You'll want to get back into the habit of controlling the food you eat and exercising regularly because it makes you feel good, especially when the weight starts to come off again. You may be a little disheartened if you put on weight over Christmas, but it shouldn't take too much effort to get back into the swing of things. Christmas messes up your routine anyway, so that as soon as you get back into your normal routine it will be less of a struggle to start following your diet again.

Deciding to take a break from your diet doesn't necessarily mean the end for your weight loss; it just means recognising that weight loss is part of a longer process and that you ought to be able to enjoy yourself from time to time without feeling guilty.
