Paranormal experience

by Jane Ganly

Ghosts and haunted houses are not the only paranormal encounters one can experience . Yes, I have been touched...once. And yes, I have heard my father, who had passed away six months earlier, give me an order, which led to a life saving visit to an emergency room. And no, paranormal encounters are not always meant to scare the living. My latest supernatural encounter was a comforting sign from a special soul. My soul mate! Am I psychic? No, I don't believe so. I tend to think that my soul is just very open to communication from other souls who have passed on.

This most recent paranormal encounter occurred shortly after the death of someone I believe was my soul mate. In fact we both believed we were soul mates. He knew just how to sooth my fears, calm my racing heart, reassure my goodness, wipe away my tears, and erase my loneliness. Now I must tell you that I have a few recurring dreams. Although these dreams are usually frightening there is nothing paranormal about them. My soul mate was aware of my scary recurring dreams as I would recount them to him in great detail.

On this one particular evening I had crawled into bed at my usual time, and had no problem drifting off to sleep. I quickly fell into a recurring dream. Not to get into a lot of detail, I will say it was about my son and an unexpected turn of events which would drastically alter his life for the worse. In the dream I was overwhelmed with sadness, fear, and anger. I woke suddenly, gasping for breath, my heart pounding wildly while a sense of dread flooded over me. Moments after my eyes opened a clicking noise broke the silence of my bedroom. This cracking, clicking noise was coming from the corner of my room, where the television stood. My cable box, with it's illuminated clock display sits atop it. My eyes snapped to the corner of the room. A few seconds passed as my eyes strained to focus on the glowing numbers, and my ears tuned into the clicks.

I must tell you now I do wear glasses, not strong ones, but my vision without them is slightly blurry.

As I focused on the clicking noise, the glowing numbers, which should be displaying the time, were changing, counting down. Almost like a slot machine, rolling numbers. I stared long and hard at this odd occurrence. Was I thinking paranormal activity? No, not at all. Although I was still feeling uneasy and quite shaken from the dream I had just woke from, I had no inkling I was about to have a supernatural experience. Focusing on the number furthest to the right, as that number seemed to be changing much faster than the others (thus my describing this as a count down), I stared for approximately a minute. Watching the numbers roll. Suddenly the number just stopped. Stopped changing. It was the number 6. Now these numbers are made with straight lines so it was two straight lines down, one straight line across the bottom, one straight line up the right side and one straight line across the middle. A straight line number six. Recognizing this number I also realized the other numbers had also stopped changing.

Since I was originally focused on the number furthest to the right I then glanced at the number next to it. Reading right to left. It appeared to be a large zero. Square shaped of course. Next I looked at the last number, the one furthest to the left, but it wasn't a number. I was stumped, and confused. At this point I was totally awake and more than anxious to find out what heck was going on. This wasn't a number, and I couldn't figure out what the display said. Trying to decipher what I was seeing, it appeared to be a foreign symbol, a large zero and a six. I quickly reached for my glasses. Now I mention this as a way of emphasizing the fact that I was totally, and unquestionably awake. No longer in any kind of dream state, I could not attribute these events to being groggy or fuzzy from sleep or poor vision. Placing my glasses on I looked again at the first strange symbol, the one furthest to the left. It was a small letter r. Made boxy, as again, only straight lines are used to form the numbers on the display. Okay, so it was an r. Then I read the other numbers, which were actually letters, the correct way. From left to right the cable box glowed... rOb .

My heart stopped for a moment. I stared in disbelief....Frozen in bed....Rob... That was my soul mates name. I layed there in the dark silence, inches away from my cell phone, which takes amazing pictures. I couldn't move. I couldn't think. Looking back now , I wish I had been able to move, to capture this imagine in a picture. But I didn't, I couldn't, I could only read his name. Over and over. The feeling of dread and despair, followed by confusion was gone. In it's place a sense of serenity, calmness, and well being washed over me. A familiar feeling I had often experienced while Rob was here on this earth with me.

The clicking had also ended. It was quiet, eerily quiet. The glow of his name pierced the darkness. A minute or so passed then suddenly, quickly, loudly the clicking began again as the numbers once again scrambled and began to count down. I felt a release. No longer frozen in bed, I had a burst of energy and I jumped up, trying to make sense of what had just occurred while racing into my living room to look at a second cable box I had in that room. It simply and quietly displayed the time. No rolling numbers, no clicking. It was a normal display of the time. My bedroom and living room are separated by a doorway so I ran the few steps through the living room back into the bedroom. There the numbers continue to roll with that insanely annoying clicking noise. Back and forth I darted from living room to bedroom. Confirming the normalcy in the living room while amazed and confused by the supernatural events occurring in the bedroom. Several more minutes passed and upon entering the bedroom for the forth or fifth time the clicking stopped. The numbers stopped counting down. It was quiet once more and the glow from the correct time now being displayed on the box was still.

Was this a dream? Was this paranormal activity? Is my house haunted? Did I see a ghost? I know for sure this was not a dream. I was fully awake. I had thought enough to reach for my glasses. I had jumped out of bed. I don't believe this house is haunted. There had not been any paranormal activities before this and none since. It was not about the place. It was about the moment. My soul needed his touch. Ironically it came in the form of his name. A written word. I should have known that was how he would communicate with me as we wrote little notes faithfully to each other every day. It was our "thing". Not a day went by that we didn't leave each other a note. Many days there were several touching and soulful notes between us.

The final confirmation for me that this was a real supernatural encounter, and that I had not lost my mind was that two days later, well past the fear and amazement I had experienced that night, I had to call the cable company to reprogram that cable box as it had simply stopped working properly. It no longer changed channels, the volume could not be adjusted, and it would take many attempts to shut it off. They had no explanation as to why this occurred, or why it only happened to the box in the bedroom. My explanation... My soul mate Rob had contacted me the only way I would truly believe it was him... through writing!
