I believe that an alarm is a better way to go for security. Why wouldn't it be? Think of it like this: It is the middle of the night and everyone is asleep. You are in bed with your spouse and your kids are sound asleep in their room. It is quiet. You think you hear something down stairs. You are afraid. You don't know what it is or what to do. You do not own a gun or anything. You bought a guard dog for reasons like this. Someone breaks into your house. You hope that your dog will handle the situation, but the dog is asleep. What do you do now? By the time you get to a phone or realize what is happening, it might be to late. Why would you put your family and loved ones in danger? Another thing, what will happen if your dog bites the burglar? The burglar could sue or have your dog put down. This world is getting sue happy and anything can happen. If the burglar has a weapon and happens to hurt or kill you dog, not only will you have lost a pet, you lost a family member. Not everyone can even have a dog, people are allergic and it costs a lot to take care of animals. You have to feed, bathe, care for, nurture and all of those other things. Just to have a dog who might not protect your family?
An alarm system is 100% better and safer than using a dog for security purposes. We use an alarm system at our house and it makes me feel safer. We also have a pit bull. If someone breaks into your house, an alarm will go off immediately. It notifies the police and most of the time will scare off the burglar. At least you will know that someone is on the way to help. It also lowers your renters insurance. I just do not know why you wouldn't want to use any other form of security. My dog is a sweetheart and I think if someone were to break into our house, he would probably would be happy to see him and want to play. You cannot have a viscous animal in your house, especially if you have children. I wouldn't want to put my family in danger with an animal that might hurt me or my family or might not even protect my house? I cannot risk my safety.
