Deciding when to travel

by James Tennant

Created on: November 30, 2009

Travelling is a joy for most people. Being able to go out and see what this magnificent world has to offer is a temptation that hits us at least once every year. Whether it be a family vacation, a backpacking adventure or an escape from everyday life, there are several factors one must consider before deciding when to set off on their dream holiday.

For Families:

Families, depending on the age of the children, are usually only able to travel in the summer months, when time off work for the parents is available and time off school or college for the kids occurs. For the latter, this is usually between the months of July and August. Unfortunately, these tend to be the most expensive months to travel as they are the most popular months for travel. So trying to find the best deals is the aim here. Search the web or try different travel agencies and packages to find the best deals and the best holidays suited to your family and tastes.

Destination is also a big consideration. For younger children, somewhere that has plenty to do would be advisable, for older children, perhaps a more relaxed holiday is on the cards. Going on holiday during the high summer months, as many families will, means that, depending on the destination, the weather will be very nice. There will be plenty of sun for days out and exploration or just relaxing on the beach. Perhaps a warning should be that, for younger children especially, the weather in certain places, such as southern Spain, Italy and France, can get very hot indeed and precautions should be taken before leaving.

For Backpackers:

For a backpacker, the world is their oyster. Everywhere is a possibility and there is really nothing like having the freedom to go where you want, when you want. Like families however, backpackers are also constrained in certain aspects of holidaying. Although most backpackers save up a certain amount of money before heading off on their trip, moving around frequently, and staying on the holiday for many months, as is often the case, can become rather expensive. So it is important to check out for money saving deals wherever they go.

Staying in hostels is not only a great way to save money, but a great way to meet new people who have the same passion for travelling as well. Often from different countries, backpackers can learn about different cultures and it is a great way to open ones mind. An HI Hosteling card is a great way to save and gain benefits from the HI hostels dotted all over the world.
