I hear a Click, Boom, Clack.....
My mind which is normally finely tuned, is now out of whack...
My body stiffens with each new sound..
Ready for a reason to turn this place upside down.
Gotta find this source of my newly found fear..
Afraid that it is huge, and very very near.
I slide out of bed and creep down the staircase..
Carrying with me, a can full of mace.
Sneak to the window and take a glance through the curtain...
Even with darkness I see a figure move, not human I am certain.
My heart is pounding as I turn on the outside light...
Just to discover a dog by my dumpster, the reason for my fright.
I laugh to myself as I head back up to bed....
Maybe I shouldn't let those kind of noises, get into my head.

Poetry: Afraid to sleep
by Cyn Bagley
In the ICU
Hear my heart beat at one hundred
beats per minute
Hear the groaning soldier
with a severed leg
Hear the screaming
Like a rabbit,
In the middle of the night,
I stare at the ceiling
Afraid to sleep.
I don't want to close my eyes,
I can't try to go to sleep.
I don't like saying goodbyes.
And I sure don't like to weep.
I hear a Click, Boom, Clack.....
My mind which is normally finely tuned, is now out of whack...
My body stiffens with each
I don't want to go to sleep
I'm not afraid of the dark
I'm afraid of my mind
It shouldn't be left to it's own devices
