Going Greek: How to decide if you should join a fraternity or sorority

Fraternity and sorority life in college has the potential to be one of the best decisions one can make. Benefits for joining Greek organizations can range from social networking to simply having a good time. Whatever the reason one might choose to join a fraternity or sorority, you are guaranteed to learn more than expected and that knowledge will benefit you throughout college and into the rest of your life. The diversity of organizations and members is enormous from chapter to chapter and campus to campus.

There are three main types of Greek organizations; service, professional and social. Social fraternities and sororities are the most common and is what the typical person thinks of when he or she hears the word fraternity or sorority. The key to finding one that is right for you, if there even is one that is right for you, is finding the place that allows you to accomplish your goals. The basic principle surrounding the question of whether or not you should join a Greek organization is that if you do join, you will get out of the organization what you put into it. The more you are willing to contribute to the success of the organization and your potential brothers/sisters, the more you will benefit.

One of the most popular reasons for joining a fraternity or a sorority is to find a home away from home. Going away to college can be a difficult prospect for many young students. Often students leave friends and family that they grew so close to in high school and travel hours from home for their college education. Without those familiar faces a large campus can seem like a foreign country. This is exactly why fraternities and sororities came into existence; to give college students with similar interests, beliefs or goals a support network and a family away from home.

Social networking is another extremely important and common reason people join Greek organizations. These organizations have been pumping out some of the most successful people in the world from colleges and universities across the United States and the world. The saying 'It's not what you know but who,' could never find a better example than the Greek system. The chances of you running into someone who was in a Greek organization in college when looking for a job after graduating is extremely high whether they were in your particular organization or not. Employers who have experienced Greek life in their college days will understand the kind of people that come out of those organizations and
