I have a 17 year old teenager. He is a good kid. You can be a friend with your teen as long as they know you are a friend/parent. I give my son the respect he deserves. I remember what it was like as a teenager. My parents were very strict so that caused me to defy them a bunch and then get in trouble. I now understand there motives but it was hard to accept at the time. My 17 year old has many privileges but he does know his limits. He has to keep good grades in school and do chores around the house. Consequences happen if he doesn't, and he knows that. I trust him until he gives me a reason not too. The days of me being a teenager and my son being one are totally different. You have to grow with your child and you will learn. You have to have a trusting relationship with your teen. With a trusting relationship the teen is more open minded about discussions on alot of topics that you can keep up to date with your teen. If they slide and get in trouble by devying you then they are responsible for the outcome of the rest of their teen years. Because you are less likely to trust and allow your teen to be as free as they were.
