Why some people are addicted to text messaging

by Tommy Koh

Created on: November 29, 2009

From the dawn of the hand phones twenty to thirty years back, it has very much changed the life of the human race from wired communication, the world was abruptly turned into a dimension where people would talk into small gadgets anywhere along the road and someone on the other end would be doing the exact same thing. Communication became global, became hand held, the world was changed.

Soon, communication on the hand phone was not limited to voice only, messages in text formed were created. Also known affectionately as SMS (Short Message Service), it is easy to use. Using the 9 buttons on your mobile phone, one could use a dictionary that is Pre-Programmed in the hand phone to generate a text message of not longer than 160 letters, or if not sending multiple messages to complete a full understandable message

Text messaging is convenient, cheap, typing at high speed excites people, people can play out all kinds of emotions through emoticons and for those who are less confident of their tone or voices, its the best alternative.

Lets elaborate more on the topics that we would like to discuss.

1. Text Messaging is convenient.

Sending a text message is just as easy as one wants to make a phone call. On a clear screen, one inputs the other party's number, input the message that he wishes to convey and send. There are no extra jobs to it and all one has to do is wait out for the other party to read your message and in turn reply to it, forming a correspondent and of course closing up on what is to be discussed or settled.

2. Text Messaging is cheap.

For most service providers, they could give up to 600~800 text messages "free" as long as you have a contract with them at low cost, or for most, just a few cents would suffice to send a message, as compared to paying per minute based calling, it is indeed much cheaper if you were to just convey a short message.

3. Typing messages at a certain speed excites people.

These may sound controversial but true. For some people, being able to dance fast, move fast or even speak fast could make them feel high and all happy over. Same applies for those who could actually type short messages very fast, there are even competitions for those who could type short messages at record speeds. People get so into typing messages at fast speeds, they also compete with friends to beat them in it. Thus, culminating to addiction.

4. Text messaging allows for certain emotions to be created.
