Pornography has been, and will likely always be, a part of our society in that it tugs at not only a forbidden ideal but also a fantasy world. Like a romance novel, some get a mental rush from seeing or reading a sexual adventure from the other side of the fence-so to speak. Most of us in western society are taught to keep one spouse yet we see that some other parts of the world are keeping harems and many wives. With the likes of Playboy magazines Hugh Heffner, which some would call the God of porn, generations have been built to revere such attitudes as expressed by the past generations of womanizers.
Many people in Christian parts of the country, with a few exceptions, agree that we are meant to be with one person until death do we part, and take an oath by Gods witness to do such. However, as it stands in 2009, 52% of us now breach the contract before our spouses and God either by cheating or otherwise dissolving the relationship, pretty sad huh? Understandably, not all marriages or marital promises are based on God but rather respect for one another and the promise to be faithful. The question then of pornography, and it's ease of access, then becomes a decision of the user and thereby an addition to a relationship. Pornography can become the " other woman, or other man" in a relationship, but there is further discussion to be had and porn should not be dealt a fatal blow unto itself.
Humans need distraction and fantasy which, if used properly, expands relationships and the minds of both. To play Devils advocate for a moment, we sometimes need a fantasy which can lead to sexual enlightenment. If we have never seen an idea or position from a porn movie we may have never thought of it. But in digression, it's all in how the viewer internalizes pornography. Is the viewer wishing he or she was with the person on the film, or his he or she using it for ideas for the one they love?
In general terms, the suggestion is that porn has it's place in society because we all want to learn something we didn't know, and we want to see something beyond the fence. Basically it is in how we look at it to decide if it's a harm to us in our personal relationships and deal with it accordingly. From a gender perspective, it is interesting that men could not care less if a woman "looks but does not touch", but that reciprocity is rarely afforded to men in most scenarios. Porn is a look but not touch endeavor but women don't seem to get that feeling from it when men partake of a peek now and again.. From this perspective the feeling is that porn is bad for men based on a womans mentality and therefore it must harm society. As a wise old country farmer once said, if mama a'int happy, no one is happy. From this can be taken that porn is not a societal issue but a relationship issue.
In closing, porn itself can be seen as a harm to people, and just like guns or drugs, they can all be bad depending on the user. Conversely,we can use porn to enlighten our sex lives, drugs to defeat depression, or guns to halt a criminal. We are a free country and no one thing can be banned or spoken against because someone had a bad experience based on the user of any the above.
