Reasons to stop smoking

Created on: November 28, 2009

There are so many reasons to stop smoking and most smokers are very aware of what they are. The problem for most smokers is that nicotine is a drug that is not easy to stop. Many smokers find themselves lighting up out of habit and although they wish they could fight it, for many it takes a lot of effort and suffering to quit.

The costs of smoking are rising as lawmakers are adding taxes to the purchase of cigarettes. This is not the only financial cost of smoking. Smokers get sick more often than non-smokers do. Respiratory ailments increase in smokers. Even with health insurance, the costs involved with smoking-related illnesses are another reason to quit. Time lost from work, visits to the doctor's office and prescription costs are all a factor in why you should stop smoking.

Money aside, what about the risks to your health? It is a fact that with every drag of a cigarette you are destroying your lungs. You are increasing your heart rate and stressing your heart. Your entire body is affected by every cigarette you smoke. You are shortening your life and if you quit in time you can reverse many of the negative effects that smoking has had on your body.

What about the smell of nicotine? If you stop smoking you will no longer carry that odor of stale cigarettes in your hair and on your body. Your teeth will become less yellowed as will your fingers. Your sense of smell and taste will improve and you will notice the difference within days of quitting. The increased sense of taste is often the reason why recent quitters gain weight. This does not need to happen if you follow a strict diet and become aware of what you are eating and how much. Sugarless gum is a good substitute for having something in your mouth.

There are so many reasons to quit smoking now. Non-smokers can live longer than smokers. We know that smoking increases your chances of so many cancers, that alone should be a reason to quit. Smoking does not do anything positive for your health. It is as simple as that. If you want to increase your chances of living a long and healthy life, quit smoking today. In days your body will notice a difference and you will be glad that you made the choice to quit. For help and tips, use the following site.
