The Mask
She panics on the inside,
as the her best friend stares her down.
She says to the empty shell:
"You lie to me, you lie to them, you lie to yourself."
And a piece of the mask cracks off and falls.
She screams on the inside,
as her boyfriend pressures her on the bed.
He says to the empty shell:
"If you really love me you will."
And a piece of the mask cracks off and falls.
She sobs on the inside,
as she takes the toxic rolls.
They say to the empty shell:
"Take a puff and pass it."
And a piece of the mask cracks off and falls.
She pleads on the inside,
as the doctor contemplates how to save her life.
He says to the empty shell:
"Why do young ones TRY to die?"
And the mask cracks off and falls away.
Once a good girl, she merely wanted friends.
Once a good girl, it merely got out of hand.
How did she lose herself so much along the way?
Putting up a bigger masquerade,
It got out of control and no longer could she stand,
but here she is alive and atoning for her sins.
The porcelien mask has fallen away,
and now she proudly displays,
her beautiful but scarred face.
Who knew someone once so face,
could not be saving others from the same fate?
Lovingly but taking them fast,
ripping away all those fake masks.
