Gentleman's guide to keeping his lady happy on Valentine's Day

by Joan Collins

Sending thrills and chills up and down the spine of the love of you life is your goal because you love your woman. You want to make her the happiest woman in the world but you're not sure how to make it happen. Retailers will tell you flowers, candy and diamonds are what she prefers. While diamonds may a girl's best friend in the movies, it does not take expensive gifts to win her heart and keep her happy on Valentine's Day.

The first step to your lady's happiness comes from planning. Don't be taken by surprise on February thirteenth.  Make a reservation at a quaint, romantic restaurant.  Take time to make your reservations early.  The nicer the restaurant, the earlier you should book your reservations.  Even if you can't afford a multi-course meal, dessert and a drink at a fancy restaurant will buy you smiles.

A warm, romantic dinner doesn't require a restaurant.  A wonderful alternative to a dinner by reservation is a dinner made by you. Bone up on your culinary skills and treat your lady to a meal in.  Set the table so it is cozy; dim the lights and put on a romantic CD. She will feel so special when she knows you went to all that trouble just for her.

If it is in your budget, take her to a nice hotel.  Arrange to have a basket with special refreshments and big fluffy robes waiting.  Whisk her away to a special night together and end it in a private jacuzzi in your hotel room.

Gift-giving can be difficult, especially if you think like a man. While you may be thrilled to receive power tools, your lady will not be equally charmed to unwrap a new vacuum cleaner or blender. Pay attention to her when you shop together and you will be able to choose the perfect gift. If you can't figure it out, talk to women in her life and ask for suggestions. Before you fall into traditional thinking, find out if she loves flowers, candy or jewelry.   If she does, pick wildflowers from a field or discover her love for daisies. Discover her favorite candy or pick a piece of jewelry that suits her style.  Many women find these gifts as generic gifts that require no thought.  Don't just show up with a dozen red roses unless she loves red roses.

Make your own Valentine's gift basket for her. Add little boxes of chocolates, nail polish, perfume, small books, a CD, or any other item she would love to receive. In other words, personalize the gift basket. Include a handmade coupon booklet with coupons for a foot and back massage, kisses, a free night out while you watch the kids, or coupons for other things your lady would appreciate.  The more personalized you can make it, the more precious it will be to her.

Top your homemade gift basket off with a handmade card. It doesn't have to be fancy. The most important element will be the message you print on the inside. Contemplate what she really means to you, what you appreciate about her and then tell her. The tears she cries will be happy tears.

Marriage proposals are incredibly romantic on Valentine's Day.  If you are ready to take the big step, choose a special, unforgettable way to ask your special lady to spend the rest of her life with you. The happiness quotient will go through the roof and the thrills and chills won't stop for months!

You may have seen the book, "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff?" The truth is, it is the small stuff that will make or break Valentine's Day for your lady and you. Be attentive and thoughtful. Considerately choose your gifts and activities. Treat her like the jewel you think she is and she will be happy. If fact, consider the small stuff every day and the happiness won't have to end!
