Could you imagine life being like a fairytale, like Snow White waking to her true love's kiss? Or Cinderella dropping her shoe, and Prince Charming endlessly searching all over the kingdom to find her? Well, unfortunately, life is anything but a fairytale. If Snow White lived now, she would be waking up to a one night stand and a bad hangover. Since day one, women have always searched for that perfect man. A man with a perfect smile and sense of humor. Is he really out there? Oh yes he is, but you have to check him out at the public library or at the nearest Block Buster.
The point is women have very complex needs and desires. When we were little girls, we were shown movies like Beauty and the Beast, where the beast turns into a prince, or Sleeping Beauty, where her love slays a dragon just to be with her. And now that we're older, we're hit with this reality that there really is no brave, strong knight who is going to sweep us up off our feet and ride off into the sunset with us in his arms. The reason being is because men are just happy with a nice cold beer and a quickie in the Mini Mart bathroom. Just hit it and quit it.
Finding that perfect man ( if there is such thing) is such a time-consuming waste of time, so women need that special outlet. The reason women fall so deeply in love with fictional men - like in Pretty Woman - is because Richard Gere is number one a babe, and number two he takes Julia Roberts in and gives her a fortune just to stay with him. It's every woman's fantasy to be rescued by a rich, sexy, sensitive man, isn't it? And can you blame them? The "modern man" is either a hillbilly with a gun or a nicely dressed business man with a stiffy and a bad idea. Women need the sensitive love that is always shown or explained in great detail in romance novels and chick flicks. Women need to believe that that one special man who loves like Prince Charming and looks like Gerard Butler is out there somewhere looking for them like in Cinderella. And even though deep down women know they will probably have to settle for the next door neighbor with a receding hair line, they still dream of that one guy who is good looking, romantic, and will be there for them in the morning.
So why do women fall in love with fictional characters? Because fiction is what you make it to be. You can have anything you want in your dreams because its fiction. Fictional men are perfect in every way, shape, and form. Because all you have to do is push play on the DVD player and there he is. The perfect man.
