Common Cat Health Problems

Cats are a wonderful part of our lives. We want to keep them healthy so that we can continue to enjoy their company for many years. Knowing what some common health problems are prevalent can help us to keep them strong.

If you notice any of the following symptoms in your pet there may be a problem; loss of appetite, a dull coat, excessive grooming or itching, not grooming after eating, lethargy, hiding in new or unusual places, vomiting, or diarrhea, excessive drooling, trouble using the litter box, or any other behavior that is unusual for your cat. Knowing your particular animal is the best way of deciphering if there is a problem.

Here is a list of common health problems; hairballs, fleas, plant poisoning, worms, and viral infections. They can have digestive problems, urinary problems, respiratory problems, skin problems, similar to what humans experience.

Hairballs are probably the most common problem. One well known traits of cats are that they keep themselves clean by licking themselves. This, of course, means that they ingest fur. This fur can get caught in the cats stomach, after forming into a ball.

Worms are also another common problem of cats, most domesticated animals. The most common types of worms are; roundworms, tapeworms, and hookworms. They can be easily treated with medication from your veterinarian.

Fleas are also common, they can be picked up when the cat goes outside. The flea lives off of the cats blood. One flea, or a small number can make your pet uncomfortable. But a large infestation can make the animal anemic. Fleas can be treated or prevented with medication that is applied to the back of the animal, starting at the base of the neck.

Kidney disease or chronic kidney failure is a main killer in older cats. It has been contributed to an all dry cat food diet. Again, consult your vet for a specific diagnosis.

Conjunctivitis is a problem with the eyes. The eye can get red, watery and crusty. This can come and go many times over the life of the cat.

Ear mites infestations can cause many problems, like infections. It can be very uncomfortable for the cat.

Feline leukemia virus used to be a fatal disease in cats. But now there is a vaccination which can prevent the disease.

Lyme disease is also found in cats. It is spread by ticks, which can be prevented with medication.

Toothaches and tooth decay, bad breath are also found in cats.

The best measure of prevention are regular visits to the veterinarian. He will provide all of the proper testing and vaccinations necessary. Plus, pay attention to your animal, get to know him and his normal behavior.
