The Christmas season is steeped in tradition. Although each family and each culture have traditions that are unique to them, there are three specific traditions that are shared by most during Christmas. These traditions are the Christmas tree and Christmas decorations, the giving of gifts and Christmas family reunions. Without these, Christmas would not be what it is.
In most countries where Christmas is celebrated, the Christmas tree, Christmas lights and decorations are an important part of the season. To many people, the Christmas tree symbolizes Christmas. People put up live or simulated Christmas trees in a focal point in their homes, towns or cities and decorate and light them up. At home, gifts are placed under the Christmas tree.
Decorations such as wreaths, mistletoe, and stringers are also used on the inside and outside of homes. Christmas lights in varying degrees of simplicity or sophistication are strung on the interior and exterior of homes and lit up in the evenings. It is typical, during this time, to see the twinkling of lights inside and outside almost all buildings. During this season, Christmas lights and decorations are sold in abundance.
The giving of gifts also typifies Christmas. There is controversy as to the origin of gift giving at Christmas, however, this has become embedded in our Christmas traditions. So during this season, gifts are exchanged especially among family and friends. There is no steadfast rule as to what day to give gifts but in most families people wait for a time, especially Christmas morning when, everyone can gather and share in the opening of gifts.
Family reunions at Christmas are another essential tradition. During this time people get away from their daily activities to go home and spend time with the family. Family unions are usually held with the extended family and may involve activities such as Christmas dinners, barbecues, parties and other such activities. Many travel long distances to be part of their family's tradition at Christmas. People look forward to sharing in traditional Christmas dishes and confectioneries prepared at home. For some, this is a time for meeting with family members that they may not have seen for the year.
These three traditions are essential to the Christmas season. However, there are many other traditions which make Christmas such a joyful season. The sharing of Christmas cards, social events, special food and drinks are all part of Christmas. But Christmas would not be Christmas without the Christmas tree and decorations, the gift giving and family reunions.
