Book reviews: Building Your Own Home, by Murray Armor

I have always had this perverse idea, since being a child, that I would like to build my own home. As an adult this is highly unlikely, in the 'true' self-build sense of the word, as I am not a builder there is always the throw money at a project manager option. Still, that doesn't stop me having an interest in how it is done.

Now it would easy to think: this is how it is done; dig and lay some foundations, lay the drainage, plan service provision. build shell - leave holes for doors and windows then install, cover with roof, wire and plumb, decorate. Done! Well something like that anyway.

OK that is how it might be physically done, but there is so much more involved, like jumping through local authority hoops and breaking through red tape.

There is so much to consider in a self build, the average brain would go into meltdown. There are many different levels from where you can begin approaching your plan. Some have the idea of a self-build as being a project where you throw money at a team of architects, builders, designers and councillors (if you know what I mean). Some other's idea of a self build is to do the whole thing themselves, within reason, or with a small and dedicated team.

Building Your Own Home, by Murray Armor is a deep guide to the self-build project. Be warned it is NOT a How To Be A... for the budding bricklayer/architect/plumber/electrician etc etc.

This book will tell you what you must consider and deal with (and there is LOT you will come up against). Just some of the pointers that this book will guide you with: it will tell you how to find, evaluate and buy a plot. Financing the project; your plan of attack; choosing a design; getting plans drawn up; planning and approvals; specifications and contracts; subcontracting; traditional or timber frame?; energy saving; self build associations.

There are 24 case histories with stories behind costs and plans.

This is a big book and will keep you busy.

Since reading this book, my master plan of building my own place has gone out the window. This book, as well as being a smashing guide for the enthusiastic and capable self builder, will also make your mind up for you as to whether you are cut out for it. Its best purpose in my opinion though is to dampen your dreams - a self-build is not to be taken lightly and whether you have the bottle to see the project through or whether, after reading this you become a shrinking violet, this book will have been invaluable - for those with staying power it will give huge insight, for those who it has put off, it will save them money and heartache - either way it is an excellent read.
